Cody Henderson to perform in home concert with Heidelberg University choir

2015 Apr 20

Cody Henderson of Bellevue, Ohio, is among the 50 members of the Heidelberg University Concert Choir preparing for their final concert of the academic year as well as the upcoming annual spring tour.

For its home concert April 26, the choir will perform a program with the theme "Faith, Hope & Love." Under the direction of Dr. Greg Ramsdell, the choir is the premiere mixed choral ensemble of the university's School of Music & Theatre. Repertoire for the home concert is a deliberate reference to the final verse of the "love" chapter: 1 Corinthians 13.

"Because of the sacred allusion inherent in this theme, a great deal of the repertoire we will be presenting is drawn from the sacred choral tradition," Ramsdell said. "However, rather than simply pulling from a limited number of genres and styles, the repertoire for this program is intended to represent a diverse and eclectic potpourri of choral literature."

The concert program features "Cornerstone," a piece with strong allusions to the gospel style; "Praise the Lord," an African folk song; "Break of Day," Michael John Trotta's emotionally charged setting of John Donne's poem of the same name; and "No Time," an arrangement of three camp meeting songs. "There should be no question that each selection on the program has been expertly wedded to inspiring texts of universal appeal," Ramsdell said.

Several selections feature solos or accompaniment by students from the choir. Featured soloists include Cody Henderson, Chelsea Smith, Kelly Devine, Cy Boehler and Tim Borham. Organ accompaniment will be provided by Stephen Smith and violin accompaniment will be provided by Cedric Robinson.

Since its inception in 1938, the Concert Choir has achieved the distinction of being one of the premier collegiate choral ensembles in the Midwest. Open to all Heidelberg students, regardless of major, the Concert Choir rehearses three times each week and performs more than 15 concerts each year, including a domestic tour and a performance of Handel's "Messiah" as part of Heidelberg's Christmas concert at Tiffin's Ritz Theatre for the Performing Arts.

The upcoming tour will take Henderson, a sophomore majoring in Music, and the choir south for a series of performances May 11-16 in Kentucky, Georgia, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.
