Higgins participating in service project during Heidelberg University spring break

2015 Mar 10

Meredith Higgins of Topeka, Kan., a senior majoring in Psychology and International Studies, traveled to Nicaragua this month to participate in Heidelberg University's popular and growing Alternative Spring Break program, a weeklong service trip.

Destinations this year included Milwaukee, Wis., where students are working in local schools; Morehead, Ky., where they helped with a community rebuilding project; Biloxi, Miss., where they worked with the Back Bay Mission on the ongoing rebuilding process in communities ravaged by Hurricane Katrina, and in Nicaragua and the Dominican Republic, where teams of students performed service in underprivileged communities.

Administered by the Office of Religious Life and Community Engagement, Heidelberg's Alternative Spring Break program provides a learning model for experiencing different cultures and the important role of the servant leader, preparing students to be socially conscious citizens of the world.
