Jenna Rhoades participates in Heidelberg's Alternative Spring Break program

For most college students, spring break is a time to relax at home or have fun in the sun. About 30 Heidelberg University students headed south during spring break this year, but not for the typical reasons. Three groups completed a week of community service in Kentucky, Mississippi and Nicaragua.

Jenna Rhoades of Medina, Ohio, a senior majoring in communication, traveled to Nicaraguato participate in Heidelberg's popular Alternative Spring Break program, a weeklong service trip. In Morehead, Ky., they helped with a community rebuilding project. In Biloxi, Miss., the worked with the Back Bay Mission on the ongoing rebuilding process in communities ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Finally, one team traveled to Jinotega, Nicaragua, where they taught English to grade-school children through Outreach360.

Administered by the Office of Campus Ministry and Religious Life, Heidelberg''s Alternative Spring Break program provides a learning model for experiencing different cultures and the important role of the servant leader, preparing students to be socially conscious citizens of the world.
