Jessica Kidd part of Thank A Giver (TAG) Day at Heidelberg

2013 Mar 1

Jessica Kidd of North Ridgeville, Ohio, and members of Heidelberg University's Student Alumni Association organized the university's celebration of TAG Day, short for Thank A Giver Day. TAG Day is a key component of National Student Philanthropy Day, held on college campuses across the nation on Feb. 28.

The purpose of TAG Day is to bring awareness and understanding of philanthropy to students. At Heidelberg, students signed thank-you postcards to donors, asked their professors to wear TAG Day stickers and hosted related activities on campus. About 100 locations on campus were "tagged," denoting that each was made possible by the generosity of a donor.

At Heidelberg, TAG Day also served as the kickoff for the Senior Class Giving program. Each senior will be asked to contribute $20.13 in honor of their graduation year and as a beginning point to an attitude of philanthropy. "With their gift, they will have the opportunity to thank a person who helped make their Heidelberg experience possible and rewarding," she said. Those designations will appear in a special insert in the commencement program.

As a member of the Student Alumni Association, Kidd, a junior majoring in psychology, is among a group of 17 students getting a jump start on the responsibilities of becoming Heidelberg alumni. As members of the SAA, the students serve as liaisons between future students, current students, alumni, donors, friends and the Office of Institutional Advancement & University Relations, and promote student philanthropy across campus.

The group, in its third full year of operation on Heidelberg's campus, meets regularly to plan events and fundraisers that bring awareness to current students about becoming philanthropic after graduation. Each graduating class will determine how to utilize their funds. In addition, SAA members participate in alumni networking events and other major events on campus.

Their motto is "Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow."

Founded in 1850, Heidelberg offers 32 majors, 29 minors and nine pre-professional programs, awarding the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of music degrees , as well as master's degrees in education, counseling, business administration and music. Affiliated with the United Church of Christ, Heidelberg has been ranked for 25 consecutive years as one of the top colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News and World Report.
