Jessica Reed Completes Service Trip to Tex-Mex Border

2012 Jul 24

Jessica Reed of Medina, OH, was one of a group of Heidelberg University students who recently returned from a service learning project to the Texas-Mexico border.

Reed, a junior majoring in psychology and history, joined 15 other students, three Heidelberg alumni and Spanish professor Dr. Cynthia Lepeley on the trip as the culmination of a spring semester course, titled "Introduction to U.S.-Mexico Border Issues."

Throughout the semester, the students explored the socioeconomic and cultural realities of life along the border as they prepared, implemented and reflected on the weeklong service project.

The Heidelberg delegation traveled to South Texas June 16-23, where they spent time in three Mexican communities. In Heidelberg's seventh year of collaboration with ARISE, a local grassroots organization, the students conducted fun activities for the children in host communities in the Rio Grande Valley region.

Heidelberg, founded in 1850, offers 36 courses of study in 19 major fields of concentration, awarding the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science, bachelor of music, as well as master's degrees in education, counseling, business administration and music. Affiliated with the United Church of Christ, Heidelberg has been ranked for 24 consecutive years as one of the top colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News and World Report.
