Joshua Hinkel traveling to SF for Model UN

Joshua Hinkel of Wooster, Ohio, a junior majoring in criminal justice and political science at Heidelberg University, is traveling to San Francisco April 17-21 to participate in the Model United Nations of the Far West Conference as part of university's delegation. This year's theme is "The Reach of the UN in the Modern Era: The Conflict between Individual, Collective and Sovereign Rights."

Heidelberg has participated in the Model UN conference for the past 17 years. This year, 25 other colleges and universities and several hundred students will join HU for the Model UN, which will open its 65th session on April 17. The simulation is designed to broaden the students' understanding of the principles and means by which international relations are achieved and maintained. The program helps students develop a greater understanding of the nations of the world, the relations between them, their policies, and the nature of their work in the United Nations.

Heidelberg students have spent the semester learning about the United Nations in a political science course taught by Dr. Marc O'Reilly. They then then delve more deeply into the history and positions of one or more countries. This year, students will represent the countries of Ecuador, India and Israel. Participation in the conference is the culmination of their classroom experience.
