Kelly Devine Participates In Service Trip During Spring Break

2013 Mar 15

For most college students, spring break is a time to relax at home or have fun in the sun. About 40 Heidelberg students headed south during spring break this year, but not for the usual reasons. Four groups completed a week of community service in Kentucky, Tennessee, Mississippi and El Salvador.

Sophomore Kelly Devine of Hillsboro, Ohio, whose major is music, traveled to Biloxi, Miss. to participate in Heidelberg's Alternate Spring Break program, a weeklong service trip.

In Nashville, Tenn., students worked on a construction site and volunteered with Habitat for Humanity. In Morehead, Ky., they helped rebuild a community torn apart by tornadoes in March 2012. And in Biloxi, Miss., they worked on the ongoing rebuilding process in communities ravaged by Hurricane Katrina. Finally, one team joined forces with the Northwest Ohio Association of the United Church of Christ to travel to El Salvador, where they worked at a homeless shelter and engaged in service activities with local churches.

Administered by the Office of Campus Ministry and Religious Life, Heidelberg's Alternate Spring Break program provides a learning model for experiencing different cultures and the important role of the servant leader, preparing students to be socially conscious citizens of the world.

Earlier this month, Heidelberg University earned a place on the President's National Service Honor Roll. The honor roll designation is a result of the university's commitment to service learning not just among students but for the entire campus community. The Alternate Spring Break program and other successful service initiatives contributed to this recognition.

Founded in 1850, Heidelberg offers 32 majors, 29 minors and nine pre-professional programs, awarding the bachelor of arts, bachelor of science and bachelor of music degrees , as well as master's degrees in education, counseling, business administration and music. Affiliated with the United Church of Christ, Heidelberg has been ranked for 25 consecutive years as one of the top colleges in the Midwest by U.S. News and World Report.
